Data & Technology trainee

Innovation and diversity

"Having studied Technical Medicine and Biomedical Engineering, I was actually more medically oriented. But when I started my traineeship, I found that a hospital environment isn’t really my thing. I then took advantage of the COVID-19 period to complete two Master's studies in management. Using the Japanese Ikigai method, I examined which work environment would suit me better, and that's how the financial sector emerged. I've always had a thing about money – for me it's a kind of game with numbers. I also find innovation, such as cryptos and the technology behind them, hugely interesting. I also greatly value diversity and inclusiveness. This is how, after some time, DNB became more firmly fixed on my radar.

Group of friends

I started with five other trainees, and from the beginning it felt like a group of friends with whom you start to explore the organisation. Besides your initial placement, you also start in a programme that encourages you to get to know yourself better and share your struggles. You learn to give feedback and tell how you are coping with things. Now, two years later, we still share things with each other. Every new recruit has uncertainties. For example, I found it difficult to ask questions of colleagues. I didn't want to take up their time. Thanks to the programme, I no longer find that awkward at all – I do it when I need to.

For me, it is important that my work has real purpose.

Low code

During my studies, I had a really fun course where you were asked to describe the requirements of an application and brief a development team. As a result, I found the role of Product Owner very interesting. Totally unexpectedly, I got that role in my first placement, for a completely new team that builds applications with low code. I found it really cool to be given so much responsibility right away. I then went on to do project management in a small innovation team digitising processes related to the new pensions act. And now I'm at Cybersecurity as a Junior Analyst! My mentor had said: you still have the chance to do something completely different now. And, in a way, it’s kind of sensational: working with hackers and disruptions, being privy to things that are off-limits for most people.

Internationalisation

I can tell DNB really values entrepreneurship. They encourage you to take the lead, approach things differently and take colleagues on board in new developments. For me, it is also important that my work has real purpose. Whether it's pensions or security, you're dealing with essentials here. And what I personally also like at DNB is that young people are constantly joining. There’s more and more internationalisation and diversity in the organisation. So I really feel at home here."
