Broad development

'During my second Master’s programme in Entrepreneurship, I wrote my thesis on the key factors of a potential central bank digital currency. I was so interested in that topic at the time that I thought: where can I find a job that enables me to further pursue this? DNB quickly sprang to mind, and I then began deliberately considering the DNB Traineeship. I strongly value personal development and there are so many opportunities within DNB. This traineeship gives you the unique opportunity to get acquainted with different departments and operations. And apart from the fact that the traineeship gives you the opportunity to develop yourself professionally in a broad range of subjects, the societal impact you deliver in the process has also been a very important driver for me. Every day I continue to be aware of the special task that we have at DNB and how I can contribute to this.

Dissecting the law

Initially, I had hoped to do something with the payment system, the central bank digital currencies and cryptocurrencies. But when I started my first placement with the Expert Centre on Market Access (ECM) within the Horizontal Functions & Integrity Supervision Division, I was actually also quite happy with that. It is something completely different, but that is precisely what gives me another perspective. I now, for example, get to handle licensing applications, exemptions and declarations of no objection, something for which I really need to dissect the law. I went in unprepared, but I was soon able to draft my own analyses and contribute to assessments based on the Financial Supervision Act. Particularly when it involves declarations of no objections, I mostly work independently: I am the first processing official and the first point of contact for both internal and external communications.

My opinion is taken seriously, which has also allowed me to quickly master the work.

Asking questions, seizing opportunities

Despite having no legal background based on my studies, I was immediately given the opportunity to join the department hands on. This was partly because of my own keen interest and the many questions I ask. I have had to deal with a variety of legal cases, and I like the fact that I have already made such progress in this. My opinion is taken seriously, which has also helped me to quickly familiarise myself with the work.

Moreover, what I find very interesting – about both my placement and DNB in general – is the international aspect. For example, even during my first placement at ECM, I was given the opportunity to join an international meeting in Frankfurt at the European Central Bank. Other European central banks were also present, and as DNB, we were asked to give our opinion on various topics related to our gatekeeper’s position at ECM. I didn't expect to be allowed to join in so soon. It was really great to be given that opportunity.

A little better every day

My first placement is almost over now, so I am curious to see where I will go next. I do have a preference for certain departments, but I generally don't mind where I end up. I’ve had a broad education and have broad interests. My motto is: be 1% better every day than yesterday. And the DNB Traineeship actually gives you the opportunity to learn something new about the entire monetary system every day and to get better at what you do. An open attitude contributes to this – especially also on a social level. For example, I joined the JongDNB party committee. Those social dynamics within the organisation greatly appeal to me; DNB is a place where I can truly be myself.'
